The CORRECT food pyramid
This is the way the food pyramid should look. So why is the Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggesting the exact opposite?. . . .
Simple answer: Financial gain.
The most unhealthy food choices are marketed because it more profitable for the government than eating fresh farm food. 92 cents of each food dollar goes to someone other than the farmer. It's so profitable that the food industry spends 33bill dollars per year on food product advertising.
American's want to be thinner, they're known for their barrage of health products, fad diets & workout videos, but one-in-three American's is obese. The American modo?.... "Eat what you want, just diet & exercise it off". They buy the workout programs but can't shake the weight. Why? Some are just live sedentary lives, but for many... the food they eat require more exercise, per serving, than they have time for! So even though they exercise, they're still overweight.
Example:
- You must run for 15min to burn just one ounce of potato chips.
- You must bike 1hr to burn calories from one 16oz soda.
- Or walk 6hrs to burn one McDonalds burger meal with drink & fries.
Activity is important, but unless you have many hours, every day, to exercise you will not be able to keep up with a standard American diet.
On the other hand, if you eat more produce and healthy food, you can get away with a 20min workout every day. Now, everyone CAN make time for that. See my favorite effective exercises under the "healthy tips" tab.
We are not talking about being skinny. Being thin is not necessarily a sign of health. There are several healthy body types out there and studies show that having some meat on our bones can increase life span. We should pay attention to how we feel and reach our maximum heart rate (subtract 220 from your age) when we exercise.
Bottom Line;
The most unhealthy food out there is being marketed at you. . .chalk full of the worst ingredients you can put into you or your children's bodies, even if it claims "organic", "low-cal", "low fat" or "sugar free". Eat healthy and exercise regularly. Break a sweat!
Now that we have the Food Pyramid turned right side-up. Let's look at some of the items that are in that pyramid. Time to see if your pantry items stack up to the healthiest options!
